Beyond that, though, is multiplayer-centric action that encourages both cooperating with others to take down Yokai and showing off your unique skills in PvP modes. It was on the tip of everyone's tongues, so we were curious to see how they would manage to do so while creating a readable yet painterly aesthetic.Īt the core of World of Demons is a single-player experience that favors a long life DeNA and Platinum plan to launch with a handful of story missions that will be added to over the months that follow. That boils down to a word you'll no doubt see many times throughout our coverage: Uncompromised. From there, the mission was simple on the surface but full of high-walled challenges: Realize the core principles of Platinum action games on a mobile device. The concept behind World of Demons really came into fruition when Platinum creative director Masaki Yamanaka proposed the notion of a Samurai vs. So far the playable characters that have been revealed are Onimaru and Sayo, pictured below: Official English translations are available thanks to the efforts of Matt Alt and Hiroko Yoda ( Japandemonium Illustrated, 2017), who also wrote World of Demons' story script and supervised the Yokai depictions. And because it's a free-to-play game, you know it'll probably have some kind of timers or something to get you to spend money, but we'll see how that goes down. In addition, there's a Skirmish campaign, Samurai Stronghold matches, and a glut of other content to wade through. You can fuse them together into more powerful beings, and even have your yokai fight other players' squads. ![]() The yokai will act as a big part of the game, as you can collect them or get them via "gacha" methods, similar to games like Fire Emblem Heroes. You can also collect over 80 yokai to take into battle with you, three at a time. You'll need to draw symbols to bring on special finishing moves to blow your opponents away, which adds a nice little flourish to what could otherwise feel like a very typical hack and slash. And when you see a demon, you know you just have to slay it.Įach character will play a little bit differently, thanks to the touch-based control scheme. Together, the three characters work to defeat the yokai and oni (read: demons) roaming about their world. It's an upcoming free-to-play game where you'll take on the role of samurai Onimaru, shrine maiden Sayo, or a third character who's yet to be named. The company has been working in tandem with mobile developer DeNA for a new title called World of Demons. Platinum Games has been hard at work on a new project, though it might be different from what you're expecting.
